MIKHAÏL BARYSHNIKOV : LIBERTÉ, LIBERTÉ CHÉRIE
Mikhaïl Baryshnikov, trained at the prestigious Kirov Theatre in Leningrad, revolutionised Soviet ballet with his explosive energy, grace and charisma. But in 1974, whilst on tour in Canada, he defected and sought political asylum in the West. This daring and dangerous act would make him a legend.
From New York to Paris, from classical ballet to cinema, from photography to fiction, from contemporary dance to theatre, Baryshnikov turned movement into a philosophy and uprooting into a source of strength. His artistic journey, marked by breaks, transformations and high standards, resonates today as a meditation on freedom: that of the body, the mind and creativity.
The film explores the tension between the myth and the man, between the stage and life, between discipline and emancipation. A choreographic and existential portrait of a living legend who has spent his life dancing and performing a single phrase: ‘Look, I am free.’
