Scandinavian design is a myth. Like Prometheus. Or the revered, cult Citroen DS.

Behind each rough wooden table, lies a forest of symbols that have bewitched customers across France into buying. This episode of Topoï deciphers these symbols and tries to understand France’s obsession with minimalist — yet cozy — Scandinavian furniture. Comparing current French society with Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland and their traditions of craftsmanship, the show reveals a France yearning for nature, transparency, comfort, modernity and a “normal” democracy. A quest, for which France looks northward.
