Every Sunday morning, our parents and grandparents would head, soberly dressed, to mass.

Nowadays, most people prefer instead to slip into gaudy neon and prance around the parks and streets of the city. The faithful have become runners. And “I’m going for a run” is a standard phrase of our time. Almost everyone’s a runner: young and old, men and women, rich and poor, right or left-wing. Yet running causes injuries and, unless training for a marathon, is just a solitary exercise without any particular point. So why do we run?
